Careful management of the tooth socket after extraction prevents unsightly bone loss and provides a better cosmetic outcome for tooth replacement. When a tooth is to be extracted, it is very important to preserve the shape of the socket to allow implant placement in the future. In very selected cases the dental implant may be placed at the same time as the extraction and ridge preservation procedures. Most of the time, however, the socket will need to be bone grafted using resorbable membranes and allowed to heal a period of about five months prior to implant placement. It is very important that this procedure is done at the time of extraction, or the patient will face the likelihood of more extensive grafting procedures at a later time.
